My Approach
I believe we function at our best when we are able to integrate our past with our present - and our hopes for the future. As such, my role as a therapist is to support my clients as they work to deepen their holistic understanding of themselves. Sometimes this work can be rooted in deep exploration and healing from past wounds. Sometimes it's focused on navigating a mismatch in relationships. Sometimes it's a matter of simply finding the framework to unlock a new way of seeing a tricky situation. Regardless of what brings you to therapy, I bring a commitment to engaging with you from a place of deep curiosity and attunement toward the wholeness of you.
I take a relational approach as a therapist. I am a human right alongside my clients. In a time when so much self-help or psychological content is available to anyone with an internet connection, I believe the therapeutic relationship is the principal catalyst for bridging the gap from ideas to actions. As fellow humans, we will collaborate to clarify your goals and how best to support you in reaching them.
How it is like working with me
I enjoy getting to know my clients' sensibilities and respond to "vibes" accordingly. As I get to know clients individually, I learn how I show up. Some clients benefit from a more active and directive approach. Others may need me to simply hold space while they work through their own insights (like a bowling alley where I act as the bumpers). Others may need a warm, gentle presence with whom they can experience deep emotion.
In addition to my clinical training and experience, I draw on my background as an educator, coach, athlete, spouse, parent and stage performer (to name a few identities I've carried over the years) to inform my approach as a therapist.
Perhaps it's the background as a professional actor. Perhaps it's my ongoing diligence toward integrating myself pursuant to my therapeutic principles. Regardless, I enjoy code-switching in this capacity and have a broad range of versions of myself that I inhabit congruently. In a setting where developing trust is essential, and one where clients are rightfully sniffing out inauthenticity, I am consistently described as "real".
Unifying all of me is a sense of kindness and playfulness. If you asked my children, they would tell you I am the walking embodiment of a dad joke. The word "goober" seems to be applied to me with relative frequency.
I bring so much of myself into the room in the spirit of collaboration. I believe it would be unreasonable to expect my clients to connect with their authentic selves if I am not bringing mine to the relationship!
